O loving and gracious God, Father of all, you bless your people in every time and season and provide for their needs through your providential care. Your Church is continually in need of priests, sisters and brothers to offer themselves in the service of the gospel by lives of dedicated love. Open the hearts of your sons and daughters to listen to your call in their lives. Give them the gift of understanding to discern your invitation to serve you and your Church. Give them the gift of courage to follow your call. May they have the spirit of young Samuel who found fulfillment in his life when he said to you, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer. Amen. - Most Reverend Joseph A. Fiorenza, Bishop of Galveston-Houston

And the last time it cut off. And it still says no comments, so I don’t know if anyone has seen this, but I’ll try ONE MORE TIME.

I wanted to mention a problem for vocations I haven’t heard many
people talk about. These days, most college education is financed by
student loans. Grants are getting harder to get each year, and many
people just don’t save the way they might. I have a colleague who has
responded to the call to religious life, but she can’t enter until she
has paid off all her debt. The same day I heard your podcast #70, I
got a mailing from the Mater Ecclesiae Fund for Vocations. Their Web
site is http://www.fundforvocations.org. This fund helps people who
are entering formation in the priesthood or religious life to pay
their student loan debt (only their student loan debt), and it seems
like a very very worthy cause. I think they will be going onto my
donor list right after my parish, Rosary Army, and SQPN.

Oh, and here is a link to an article about how debt can affect the
ability to respond to a vocation:
http://www.religiouslife.com/a_debt_vocation.phtml

Hope you find this useful for the future,
Naomi
