I had to laugh about you saying doctors are hesitant to diagnose children as bipolar. You obviously have not spend much time around the public schools. Every third child is “bipolar” or “ADD.” I exaggerate but not much.

Here’s one theory about why there are so many ADHD diagnoses:

Bottom line: the diagnoses are not legitimate.

Oh, I agree that a lot of the diagnoses are bogus, but doctors are not terribly hesitant to make them. When my husband taught middle school, he probably had at least one kid in each of his classes medically diagnosed as bipolar. That would be seven or eight kids a day at a not large middle school. It really was the diagnosis du jour for awhile at his school. The new hot diagnosis is autism. Every slightly abnormal child is now “autistic.”
Now I believe that these disorders exist, but certainly not in the quantity of diagnoses in the schools today.
Jenny
That would be *spent.*

Another great podcast, and I especially love it when you speak on the topic of homeschooling! This is my 3rd year homeschooling and my oldest is in second grade. This year we are giving Seton Home Study a try, which I get the feeling is about as opposite from unschooling as you can get! I enjoyed your discussion on “Catholic Songs you should know” and feel compelled to purchase a good CD – any recommendations? blessings, Debi in Texas
